This is a true prayer. In 1986, I attended a conference sponsored by Americans United for Separation of Church and State in Washington DC. At the closing night banquet, that was the prayer.

I can't put my finger on it, but I really liked this post.

The guy's prayer seems a tad bit arrogant, like he has more knowledge about God than everybody else. He'd probably point the finger back at me for being an exclusivist. But really, pulling out the tolerance card, "everything is equally valid" is more along the lines of judging everyone's religion as false than it is being tolerant (respectful).

I, too, understand Laurie's sentiment, and could sympathize with her, except I cannot then explain "This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation." Without a doubt, the world trivializes and profanes God's name, and it is natural for us, then, to want to protect it. How often, though, does God simply sigh and say, "Why can they not simply obey me." Even in worship, we insist on doing it our way, not His.

I enjoyed your latest email so much that I got on here to write a comment about it. I was pretty much going to post the exact opposite of what Laurie posted (no offense). I have always heard the explanation for why the Israelites never used the name YHWH as being one of total reverence. Which, to be sure I understand the good intentions, but God revealed himself by that name in order to be known by that name.

Perhaps the fact that the world uses His name in vain is indicative of the poor way that we as believers have given it to them.

No, in respectful awe we do not repeat it aloud. We believe that all that a being is, is invested in their name. That name is not for us to use; it is for the one whose it is. 'I am that I am'. We refer to G-d reverentially in prayer, and have yet another name to refer to Him casually in conversation. Quite a difference from the surrounding culture who routinely take His Name in vain. Fear? No. Respectful awe? Absolutely!

Very cool observation. Romans 5:12 says that sin came into the world through Adam. When Adam sinned, all sinned, therefore all are condemned (v 18). Not only the nature of Adam was changed, but Genesis 5:3 indicates that changed/fallen nature is passed along to his progeny (in his likeness). Since we are the image/likeness of Adam, his sin is our sin, as well. We are still human, male and female, made in God's image; however, we are made in Gods image corrupted by rebellion. In other words, Adam's image. I like the way the writer of Genesis doesn't attempt to explain this, but he uses the language of image to point at our fallenness.

I was re-reading Genesis lately and found it interesting that in the above verse it does indeed say "created in His own image", but after the sin of Adam & Eve and Seth is born it changes and now we are created in 'Adam's own image'. Any thoughts?
