Steel Strings are Sharp - February 1, 2010

Daily Reading

Daily Verse
So Pharaoh's heart was hard
and he would not let the Israelites go,
just as the LORD had said through Moses.
Exodus 9:35

Daily Thought

My daily routine of playing the guitar has disappeared. So have the calluses that defended my fingers from the sharp steel strings. The tips of my fingers no longer look like the soles of my feet, and now when I play it hurts.

Not all calluses are good, because not all pain is bad. What may be good for feet and fingers is bad for the heart.

Calluses are indiscriminate. If they block pain, they block pleasure. If they block hurt, they also block healing.

And in the case of Pharaoh, if they block discipline, they block obedience. And blessing. And righteousness. And peace.

Hebrews 12:11, No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

To God's Glory,
Dave

Daily Prayer

God of peace and righteousness, You took pleasure in creating this world. You express joy and delight. You also express displeasure and anger when unrighteousness prevails. Your heart is full of understanding and love.

God, as we grow in our love for You, a love that permeates all that we are, our minds, our souls, our strength, may it especially fill our hearts, so that we share the same heart as You. Lord, may our hearts remain soft toward You and Your way. May we always welcome Your guidance, so that we may grow in Your character.

Amen
