Hwy One, Speed or Splendor - January 13, 2010

Daily Reading

Daily Verse
Listen to this, Job;
stop and consider God's wonders.
Job 37:14

Daily Thought

I have driven back and forth between northern and southern California a hundred times, almost always on Interstate 5. Fast lane, of course. The beauty of it is, it's a straight shot, no distractions. I mean NO DISTRACTIONS. There is nothing to look at, absolutely nothing to see. No Vista Point signs on this route. One stop along the way at Kettleman City for an In-N-Out cheeseburger, and I'm there, six and a half hours, 400 miles.

Interstate 5, every time. Except twice. Two times I detoured west along Highway One - a two-lane road, bending and curving, hugging the California coast. Santa Cruz, Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur, San Simeon. It commands frequent stops to take in fog-shrouded cliffs, rugged canyons, windswept cypress trees, the crashing surf of the Pacific Ocean. Five hundred miles, 9 hours.

Ninety-eight percent of the time, I choose speed over splendor. Why in the world do I hurry to Los Angeles? ...and bypass the wonder of God.

To God's Glory,
Dave

Daily Prayer

God of wonders, what a creation!! The stars so vast, beyond count, and yet you hold them in your palm and name them. The depth of the oceans and height of the mountains do not surpass your grandeur. Rather, they reflect your majesty and mystery.

Lord, let us measure our days. May we be productive and do the work you have called us to do. May we also rest and worship. May we stop long enough to look at this world around us and reflect. May creation draw all people to worship the Creator.

Amen
